Julia’s first involvement with textiles as an art form was back in the 1980s when she worked in three-dimensional soft sculpture under the tutelage of Victoria Bartlett at Morley College, London. More recently she attended the Creative Textile Workshop at East Berkshire College, Windsor acquiring various contemporary techniques and skills.
Much of her practice entails layering and fusing textile, paper and thread creating detailed and lively images many based on those found in medieval illuminated manuscripts and the delicate fragments of English stained glass.
More recently she has been inspired by the colourful vibrancy of 20th century German Expressionism and has also now developed an interest in the naive folk art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries!
