Julia’s first involvement with textiles as an art form was back in the 1980s when she worked in three-dimensional soft sculpture under the tutelage of Victoria Bartlett at Morley College, London. More recently she attended the Creative Textile Workshop at East Berkshire College, Windsor.
Much of her practice entails layering and fusing textile, paper and stitch creating figurative images based on medieval illuminated manuscripts and delicate fragments of English stained glass. In contrast her experimental new work shows the influence of the colourful vibrancy of 20th century German Expressionism and the European artist and designer, Sonia Delaunay.
