Julia Straiton

Julia’s first involvement with textiles as an art form was back in the 1980s when she worked in three-dimensional soft sculpture under the tutelage of Victoria Bartlett at Morley College, London. More recently she attended the Creative Textile Workshop at East Berkshire College, Windsor.

Much of her practice entails layering and fusing textile, paper and stitch creating detailed figurative images based on those found in medieval illuminated manuscripts and in the delicate fragments of English stained glass.  However, recent work with a three dimensional and mixed media aspect, has been inspired by the colourful vibrancy of 20th century German Expressionism and also an interest in naive folk art.
